Taking a road trip with kids can be an exciting adventure filled with laughter, discovery, and plenty of memorable moments. But it also comes with its fair share of challenges.
A recent survey of 1,500 parents reveals that family road trips are riddled with frustrations, particularly those involving children under 16.
A chaotic road trip life
Loud cries, urgent loo requests, and weak mobile service topped the list of travel frustrations. The study, which explored long journey challenges, also highlighted modern nuisances—poor internet and faulty sat nav.
Yet, the timeless question “Are we there yet?” proved most exasperating, outdoing other statements like “I need the loo” or “I’m bored.”
In the West Midlands, 20% of children ask, “Are we nearly there yet?” within 30 minutes of a trip, and 44% bring it up within the hour. In contrast, those from the East of England are said to ask the question no fewer than 10 times on a typical road trip.
Battling backseat boredom
Parents often turn to tablets stocked with films, TV programmes, and games to curb boredom during long trips, with over half of families relying on this digital distraction.
Annika Bizon, a spokesperson from a leading tech company, pointed out that keeping children entertained can be just as stressful as planning the holiday itself.
Jordan Banjo, a father of three and a well-known advocate for diversity, emphasised that the goal isn’t just to quiet the children but to create an enjoyable experience for all passengers.
In addition to digital entertainment, parents rely on tried-and-true strategies such as packing snacks, engaging in car games, and setting playful challenges like spotting certain-coloured cars or identifying specific road signs.
Findings from OnePoll.com indicate that an average family road trip includes two essential stops—whether for a rest or refuelling—and is punctuated by three distinct instances of passenger disagreements.
